Not of this Earth's Messer Chups Serves Up Music From Beyond

Guitaracula, Rockin Eugene, and Zombierella stitched together to create Messer Chups.

Messer Chups’ conclude their American tour Saturday night in Chicago with vintage horror and sci-fi-themed surf rock, easily making it a favorite genre of mine. Treat yourself and give them a look and listen. Eyeing their galleries while listening to their music is highly recommended. No hypnotization required!

Russia’s Messer Chups surf sound is anchored by Oleg Gitarkin’s compositions, technical virtuosity on guitar, and reverence for 60s source material. Svetlana ‘Zombierella’ Nagaeva’s basslines provide an ominous yet playful presence throughout the show, interspersing vocals that call back to a more pleasant time of mummies, robots, and the undead. Evengy Lomakin on drums rounds out the trio’s sound with beats that make you feel you’re on the run from something sinister but inviting capture by the end of each song. In short, Messer Chups’ entire stage presence, sound, and aesthetic are uniquely unmatched.

After the show, returning to whence they came, the group left temporal impressions in dark corners of the venue and a lingering sense of longing amongst the living. Hoping for their return from their collective graves soon. 💀 🦇 🎸
