Best Coast Braves 94° Temps (Feels like 104°) at Tour de Fat
Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino braves the heat.
“Hottest day of the year so far” was how the radio’s weatherman described Chicago’s current temps as I Uber’ed my way back from Tour de Fat Sunday afternoon, cursing the Uber driver’s conservative air conditioning preference, despite my raspy pleas for turning it up to arctic levels. I didn’t need the meteorological end-of-day confirmation to tell me my sweat soaked-everything, was something to denote, but there I was.
California’s Best Coast headlined New Belgium’s Tour de Fat, an annual celebration of “beer, bikes, and bemusement”. I was there for Best Coast, however, a group on my annual summer wish list, that always seemed to perennially evaporate with the end of summer. So an opportunity to photograph them in an open-air show, with plenty of natural light, held incredible promise. And Best Coast delivered, distracting fans from the late-afternoon swelter, cooling us through their Cali-surf sound. Cosentino’s and assured stage presence exhibited no signs of wilting, soldiering on through “Crazy For you“, ultimately making me feel like a wuss, on this, unholy, hottest day of the year. So far.
