Ash used to play in The Knee-Hi's. She was in the crowd with me today, not on stage, watching the band she helped build say goodbye from the other side of it.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, in that soft way she has, she said something that's stuck with me since: this final show did what most ending bands don't.
Most bands just announce it's over. No warning, no goodbye, no chance for anyone to say goodbye back. One day they're a band, the next day they're a memory, and you never got the chance to close the loop. But The Knee-Hi's didn't do that. They gave their fans one last afternoon to actually see them, before they let the band go.
A proper goodbye instead of just vanishing.
That's what this was. A thank you to the fans who'd been there all along, and to the new ones in the crowd who were seeing The Knee-Hi's for the first and last time, all in the same evening.
Maybe that's the gift of doing it right. They didn't wait for the dark but said goodbye while the sun was still out, riding into it instead of away from it, because the music doesn't end when the band does. It just goes looking for new rooms to live in.
There's something fitting about that thought coming from Ash specifically. She'd already lived her own ending with this band once. If anyone understood what this meant, it was her. They didn't need her on stage anymore for her to still understand them better than anyone else in that crowd.
