There are some fantastic Minneapolis groups channeling some of the best grunge, punk, and metal from the 90s and shaping it into something new. There's a wealth of rabbit holes I'll be going into to see more bands like Gully Boys.
For now, they've nudged me towards a sound that, to me feels new and empowering.
Gully Boys made Chicago their temporary home to the delight of locals at the Beat Kitchen Friday night, with a clear and transportive message of alternative edge and all the distortion you can handle. Not normally a fan of branding artists to genres, but in this case, it's such a glorious thing. When performing a Hole cover, the Gully Boys set the audience in full, alt-rock reverie.
It was a sound I haven't sought out in years, and their fresh take of the genre left me respecting and rethinking more of what came before them.
